Meet and Greet- Betty Passick: Gangster In Our Midst
Meet Oakdale author Betty Passick in store Saturday October 20th at noon.
Gangster in Our Midst. The book of historical fiction is the author’s third book, and tells a neglected TRUE Iowa story of one of Al Capone’s gangsters, Louie La Cava, who descended in the 1920s on the people in the small town of Oxbow (similar to Fairbank, the author’s hometown). Research bore out that La Cava was Capone’s bookkeeper, lieutenant, and sometimes hit man–plus, closely associated with Johnny Torrio, a Cosa Nostra leader on the east coast. FBI and police reports, and newspaper stories factually chronicle La Cava’s years as part of the mafia. The narrative is embellished with myriad tales—tender, funny, and unforgiving–from a dozen local octogenarians who knew the gangster best. La Cava lived among the townspeople for some sixty years.
